At Totally Girls Softball, our driving focus is to make buying softball gear “easier, cheaper and faster.” One of the most confusing aspects of buying softball jerseys is “How do I Personalize my Jerseys?” Our answer is simple: Every team we know needs a logo on the front and a number on the back. Here’s where our mantra kicks in…and how your team benefits.

Easier: To make it easier to create your unique, custom softball jerseys, we include personalizing softball jerseys free with your purchase. Since every team needs it, we figured why not make it easy and include it for free! All softball jerseys include a full front team logo. From there, you can select the numbers for the back of the jerseys. You can tell us what numbers go on what jerseys.

Sometimes, when we look at how other online softball stores operate, we’re even confused. And, we’ve done this a long, long time. It’s like you need a PhD in Applied Mathematics to figure it all out the correct pricing. Busy buyers just want a simple way to make their jerseys look great!

Cheaper: You can’t beat free! When you compare prices out there, you’re really saving $7 bucks per jersey compared to other companies. Check it out for yourself – most companies charge $3.50 for a logo and $3.50 for a number. Sometimes, it’s even more money than that!

Faster: By helping you through the process and providing customizable options, you can personalize your jerseys very quickly. You can send us your team logo or you can use one of our 200+ mascot logos or stock softball logos.

All in all, our buyers find the process of purchasing softball jerseys way easier. And, if you need more options for printing your jerseys – things like sponsors logos and player names, we can do that for you too.

The most important thing about coaching softball when children are concerned is to let them have fun. And, an important part of fun – especially for girls – is to make sure they look awesome in their new softball uniforms. When it comes to very young children under the age of 10, the whole concept of tactics and game awareness goes over their heads in favor of running out on that field and having fun. If a coach takes that great feeling away from them by insisting on winning above sportsmanship and enjoyment, they will soon find that kids start to drift away from the sport. No child will play softball or any other sport for long if the joy of the game is sucked away from them. If they are forced to carry on playing this way, they will start to resent their coach and the sport they once loved.

American Kids In Sport

Over 25 million American children between 6-16 years old participate in some form of sport either for their college or for organized teams away from school. Almost 45 million children up to the age of 18 are involved in some type of athletic program. This is a significant percentage of American kids who get involved because it helps them gain self-esteem and it reduces instances of depression. Various studies have shown that those who are involved in sports such as softball perform better academically.

Enjoyment Over Victory

When coaching softball or any other sport, it is imperative to have the best interests of the child at heart. The welfare of each individual is actually more important than the outcome of the game because sports play a big role in a child’s development. Young children who are pressurized on the softball pitch are likely to abandon the sport at a later stage. Worse still, they may be put off from ever competing in organized sports again. A child’s bad memories stay with them so a softball coach has to allow them to enjoy their experience. As each player comes towards their teenage years, the coach can then gently impart his/her wisdom in order to get the best out of the team.

What are you doing to make sure your team and players have fun?

It is necessary to follow the softball tips below if you believe that the sport is not just a pastime for you. One thing that should be noted however is that competition for softball scholarships is absolutely fierce and the odds of being accepted for a Division I NCAA spot are remote. Softball is classified as an equivalency sport unlike football so it is much harder to get a full or even partial scholarship through playing softball. There are approximately 262 Division I colleges that offer scholarships which is not an awful lot when you consider the competition. Nonetheless, there are ways and means to get yourself noticed above all the other players.

Improve Your Game

Smaller schools do not have the unlimited budget of Stanford et al. and need help from the player in order to find them. The first thing you should consider doing is attending a fastpitch camp which is where many coaches end up scouting players. If nothing else, these summer camps will help you improve your game to the next level. Also, don’t be afraid to get an honest appraisal of your abilities from those who have coached you over the years. Heed their advice and work on aspects of your game they feel can be improved.

Start Hunting For Colleges

Instead of waiting to be headhunted, go after the college teams. Write a personalized letter to the coach of every softball team you are interested in. If you receive questionnaires from college teams, fill them out and return them as soon as possible because delays suggest to them that you are not interested. Before you even write to these colleges, create a videotape which showcases your skills as some colleges will request this. Send it anyway even if it is not a prerequisite.

In order to beat the rush of players clamoring to play softball in college, follow the above softball tips to make yourself an attractive proposition to any college team. Work hard on your game and put just as much effort into being seen by scouts. Remember, the majority of those who profess an interest in playing college softball will not put in this amount of effort. By doing so, you are giving yourself a decided edge.

Softball has a rich history and it’s no ordinary sport, which means there are many unusual facts about softball . One of the strangest softball facts involves the origin of the game where the first ever softball game played involved a rolled up boxing glove as a ball and a broom handle as a bat. This happened in 1887 when George Hancock was credited with the sport’s invention. Even more interestingly, the score of this first game was an incredible 44-40 (there is some debate about whether this was the score or if it actually ended 41-40.)

Other unusual facts about softball include:

Softball was originally intended to be an indoor sport which explains the shorter distance between bases compared to baseball

The reason softball is seven innings compared to baseball’s nine is due to the actions of a Minneapolis fireman in 1895. He believed that nine innings was too long and shortened it to seven. This was adopted as the official length soon after though there are variations

Softball was known as various other names including ‘diamond ball’ and ‘mush ball’ before a Denver YMCA official suggested the name softball in 1926 when talking to the National Recreation Congress

Fast pitch softball was the dominant version of the sport in the 1940s but its dominance was short lived. The slow pitch version of the game was deemed to be the true form of the sport in 1953

Softball was not introduced to the United Kingdom until 1972

Softball has been an Olympic sport since 1996 but will not be part of the 2012 games due to a decision by the International Olympic Committee

In the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Joanne Brown of Australia stunned the home crowd when her dramatic home run snatched victory for her country. The United States women’s team have rebounded by winning the next three Olympic games however.

Softball’s Roots

The history of softball began in 1887 after a group of young men had gathered in an Illinois boat club gymnasium to hear the final score of the Harvard-Yale game, which was played on Thanksgiving Day. Various versions of how softball came to pass have been passed on through the years but the most popular one involves George Hancock tying-up a boxing glove and using it as a ball. It was thrown underhand because it was so soft and no fielder’s gloves were necessary in that particular game. The bat in this instance was a broom handle. Hancock then used chalk to mark out a small diamond and the game commenced.

Hancock decided to create rules for the game of softball including a new bat and ball. The sport became extremely popular and was used as a means of keeping baseball players sharp and active during the cold winter months. A winter league was formed in 1889 but the popularity of softball resulted in it being played outdoors also. At this time, interestingly enough, softball was known as ‘Indoor-Outdoor’.

Making Changes

It is said that a fireman from Minneapolis names Lewis Rober was responsible for another change in he history of softball. He saw that it was an excellent way to keep his men busy but reduced the matches to seven innings to ensure the game could be ended quickly while still being competitive. The Minneapolis Park Board adopted the sport in 1913 and softball was soon a popular attraction in the state with games attracting thousands of spectators.

The name ‘softball’ was officially coined by a Denver YMCA official named Walter Hakanson. The game was presented in slow pitch format at the 1933 World’s Fair but the history of fast pitch softball had begun by then. In the 1940s, numerous softball games were played with a fast pitch and lengthened pitching distance as standard. However, the Joint Rules Committee on Softball made slow pitching part of the official rule book in 1953.

In 1972, softball made its mark on Europe when it was introduced to the United Kingdom. Since then, the history of softball has seen many changes to the sport. Fast pitch softball made a comeback in the 1990s when the women’s version of the sport was added to the 1996 Olympic games. Slow pitch softball was removed from the ISF official rules in 2002. The sport suffered a major blow in 2005 when the International Olympic Committee voted to drop both softball and baseball from the 2012 Olympic program.

Rules Of Softball

The rules of softball are similar to those of baseball with nine members on each team and 4 bases. One significant difference is the fact there are only seven innings in a match. Like in baseball, three strikes means a batter is out while four balls gives the batter a free base. A softball field is divided into the infield and outfield with designated fair and foul territories. Softball however, has numerous variations with different forms of the game having completely separate rules. For example, there are softball games where there can only be one strike and one ball. There are also games which forbid the stealing of bases and other forms of the sport where there are limited home runs.

There is also a rule that is sometimes used known as the ‘run ahead rule’. This basically ends the game at any point if one team is too far ahead of the other to avoid further embarrassment. In slow pitch softball, this means a team more than 20 runs behind after four innings automatically forfeit’s the game. NCAA rules are stricter with an eight run deficit after five innings decreed as being large enough for the game to be halted.

Successful Softball Teams

The International Softball Federation holds its world championships every four years with various categories of the sport contested including slow and fast pitch. There are also world cups held every four years in some categories. The most dominant team in the male history of softball are New Zealand though Australia won the last world championships. The United States are the all conquering women’s team with three Olympic titles and seven world championships.

Custom Printing: Every team we’ve run into needs a team logo on the front and a number on the back. Instead of confusing you by advertising one price and charging another, we include free customization on every jersey. The price you see is the price you pay! No more headaches trying to figure it all out

Custom Colors: Tired of looking like everyone else? Design your own jerseys to create a unique look for your team. Choose from ten customizable designs in sixteen color options that will help you to dominate the diamond.
